A patent

The head of the Department of Materials Engineering obtains a patent

The Head of the Department of Materials Engineering, Assist. Prof. Dr. Hussain Alaa Jaber, received a patent titled "Synthesis of nano-sized substituted hydroxyapatite by using rare earth elements, magnesium, and zinc for bio-applications"

Abstract:

In this patent, a new biomaterial was invented which is hydroxyapatite substituted with rare earth elements, magnesium, and zinc, prepared in nano-size through wet chemical precipitation method, where 5% of calcium ions in hydroxyapatite were substituted with neodymium, cerium, magnesium ions and zinc. Several tests were carried out to characterize the prepared materials, and the biological properties were evaluated by examining the resistance of substituted hydroxyapatite to bacteria and fungi, in addition to testing the effect of the substance on normal cells and bone cancer cells. The results showed a new structure of hydroxyapatite after the substitution process and a significant improvement in the resistance of the substance to bacteria, fungi and bone cancer cells compared to the original material before the substitution process.

The Department of Materials Engineering held an awareness lecture for first-stage students entitled "University Student Behavior" under the supervision of The Honorable Head of the department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Hussein Alaa Jaber and the lecturer Iman Kazem Hamzah.

And that is on Thursday, 12/22/2022, at nine o’clock in the morning, in Hall 8 / Building B. Eng where her lecture included a simple presentation on the behavior and morals of the university student that stems from his upbringing at home and the reflection of this behavior on his action on campus.

At the end of the lecture, the head of the department thanked the lecturer Iman and presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

  • Assist. Prof. Dr.Kadhum M. Shabeeb (member and supervisor).
  • 5.Assist. Prof. Dr.. Hussein K. Mahmoud (member and supervisor).

In addition to evaluating the thesis scientifically by Prof. Dr.Khalid A.Sukkar/University of Technology/Department of Chemical Engineering , and Prof. Dr. Ayad M. Takhakh/ Al-Nahrain University/ College of Engineering/ Department of Chemical Engineering, and linguistically evaluated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Laith W. Ismail/ University of Technology/ Department of Materials Engineering.

Abstract

limb that is known as a socket from composite laminates to make it light, flexible, and comfortable.

These laminates are manufactured from fabric layers such as carbon, glass, and Kevlar (i.e., macro hybridization) and different fabric layers with micro particles (i.e., micro hybridization).

To improve the thermal and mechanical characteristics of the socket, multi-scale hybridization was employed in this study.

A patent

Two teaching staff, Prof. Dr. Aala Aladdin Abdel Hamid and Prof. Dr. Farhad Muhammad Othman in the Department of Materials Engineering obtained patent titled

"Using Plant Residues to Prepare Nano-Powdered Aluminum Oxide in a Green Method and Study its Structural Properties"

Abstract

In this patent, nano aluminum oxide was prepared by the green synthesis method from Mentha, Buckthorn, Damask Rose, Myrtus communis leaves, and mixture of these leaves, using aluminum nitrate as a precursor. A high-purity aluminum oxide powder was obtained with the least used materials and in an economical way.

The results showed that the powders prepared from leaves of Menthe, Buckthorn, Damask Rose, Myrtus communis leaves, and mixture of these leaves had an average particle size in nano range. Without lumps and in different morphology, also, the powder extracted from Myrtus communis leaves was in the form of pressed granules. As for the powder extracted from the mixture of leaves, it contained more than one granular shape. All the produced powders were aluminum oxide with alpha phase.

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology holds a workshop

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology held a workshop entitled "Energy, Renewable Energies and Materials Engineering Applications". And that is on Monday, 19/12/2022, at ten o’clock in the morning, in the doctoral hall / building B, in the presence of the head of the department, the respected  Hussein Alaa Jaber and the scientific assistant, the respected Prof. Dr.  Jawad Kazem Aliwi.  Administrative Assistant, Asst.Prof. Dr.Laith Waddah Ismail Lectured in the workshop. The workshop aimed to introduce energy, renewable energy, materials engineering applications, sustainability, and the use of environmentally friendly materials to reduce fuel consumption. At the end of the workshop, the department head presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Laith Waddah.
