Participation in a Conference
Dr. Mohammed A. Hussein Al-Zuhairi participated in the 3rd International Conference on Building, Construction and Environmental Engineering organized by the University of Technology in Egypt and in cooperation with Menoufia University for the period from 23-25 / 10/2017, where he presented his lecture entitled:
"Recycling polyethylene terephthalate (plastic water bottles) chemically to improve the properties of asphalt mixtures"
The research focused on the decomposing the polymerization of plastic waste of water bottles using the closed system, which used several nanoparticle catalysts, which greatly improved the properties of Iraqi asphalt.

Research Publishing
The International Journal of Mechanical and Production Engineering, vol. 5, pp. 29-25 of 2017, published a scientific research for two academic staff in the Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology (Dr. Sura S.Ahmed, Ruaa H. Abdulraheem, Eng. Hiba Anwar Abdullah) entitled: (Mechanical properties of composite materials reinforced with ceramic particles)
The polycyclic methyl methacrylate resin material was prepared by hand lay-up molding. Mechanical properties of hardness, tensile properties (maximum tensile strength, elongation at fracture), shock (shock resistance, fracture strength) and shear stress were examined.
For mechanical properties, the composite material (Acrylic + 7% ZrO2) has the maximum hardness of Shore D (72.4), the maximum strength was obtained from (Acrylic + 7% ZrO2) is 33.75MPa, while the elongation at fracture decreases with the increase in filler concentration and less value was (Acrylic + 7% ZrO2) compared to other composites. The shock resistance was higher than (83 J / m2) of (Acrylic + 3% ZrO2) compared with other composites. The fracture strength of the layers increased with the increase of zirconia particles and the highest value was 2.998 MPa/m. Bending resistance and shear stress increased for composite materials with the increasing of Zirconium oxide at 7wt% (81 Mpa) and (1.8 Mpa) respectively.

Seminar
On 25/10/1017, an seminar was presented by Dr. Aseel B. Abdulhussain, an academic staff in the Department of Materials Engineering - University of Technology about her participation in a two-week live television course at the Continuous Education Center / University of Nahrain by Dr. Adel Yaqoub Hanadal Graduate of the Faculty of Science / University of Basra and currently a professor at the University of Jonathan Berk University / Sweden. The seminar dealt with the publication of international journal and how to recognize the real and fake journals as well as the predatory publishing sites and conferences and finallyhow to turn the Iraqi journals into solid and sober international journals. An international Sweden certificate was presented to the participant Dr. Aseel B. Abdulhussain certified by UNICEF.

Scientific promotions
- Dr. Niveen J.Abdalkadir / Materials Engineering Department - University of Technology was promoted from lecturer to assistant professor in implementation of the second session of the scientific promotion committee of the university which held on 26/9/2017 for the academic year 2017 / and associated with the approval of the President of the University on 11/10/2017.
- Nada Mahdi Farhan / Materials Engineering Department - University of Technology was promoted from Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer in implementation of the second session of Scientific Promotion Committee which held on 26/9/2017 for the academic year 2017-2018 and associated with the approval of the President of the University on 11/10/2017.
Research publishing
- Dr. Aseel B. Abdel-Hussein and Dr. Kadhim M. Shabib from the Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology, published scientific research entitled" Study of the effect of glass waste on the mechanical properties of green concrete" by Elesiver on page 119 (680-692) 2017.
The research dealt with the various types of glass waste as recycling of industrial after preparation, grinding and partially replaced by concrete at different concentrations and periods. Mechanical tests showed strong compression strength and toughness at 13% concentration of glass waste.
Glass recycling also reduces carbon dioxide and produces environmental friendly materials.
- The journal (Eur.Phys.J.Plus) of Physics published scientific paper by Springer entitled:
"Manufacture and characterization of porous calcium carbonate in micro and nanoparticles"
A group of researchers from different countries (Canada, Poland, Iran and Iraq) participated in this research. The participation from Iraq was represented by Dr. Aseel B. Abdul-Hussein from the Materials Engineering Department / University of Technology.
The study deals with the manufacturing of calcium carbonate in micro and nanoparticles, where the properties were studied by X-rays and Fourier transforms. The results showed that the macromolecules have an important role in medical biomedical application.

Scientific Reviewer
Synthetic Metals, a journal of the Elesiver publishing company with a high impact factor, has invited Assistant Professor Akram R. Jabr, a academic staff in the department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology, as a scientific reviewer to review its scientific research for the year 2017.

Patent
Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control / Ministry of Planning granted a patent in the number 4863 dated 28/2/2017 to the academic staff in the Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology (Dr. Aseel B. Abdul Hussain, Dr. Emad Saadi Abdul Karim, Marwa Sobhi Ata-Allah, where the patent was entitled:
"Manufacturing of alternative materials resistant to erosion and corrosion of aircraft structures, ship fans and marine craft consisting of nanomaterial composites"
In this work, it was prepared an anti-erosion and corrosion-resistant composite consisting of pure polyester reinforced with (fiber glass, Kevlar fiber, carbon fiber and carbon nanotubes) subjected to the same conditions that the outer parts of the aircraft, ship fans and marine boats exposes, with similar salinity and fine particles collisions with external structures and so on.
It has been noted significantly that the samples resist degradation, which can be taken advantage of these alternative materials to be cheap, light and anti-corrosion materials under conditions that may be exposed to. Also it can be manufacturing these structures with long life materials more than one time. Also it is clean, green and environmental friendly.

Acknowledgments
On 2/10/2017 Prof. Dr. Amin Daway Thamir, President of the University of Technology, presented a thankful and appreciation letter No. 122 to Dr. Aseel B. Abdulhussein, Dr. Dr. Fadhil A. Hashim, and Eng. Tamara Raad Kadhim in the Department of Materials Engineering due to their patent (manufacture of corrosion-resistant material of nanomaterials for space applications) according to the followed mechanism by the university.
