Awarding Letter of THANKS

The President of the University of Technology awarded a book of thanks and appreciation to teaching staffs from the department of materials engineering.
The honorable president of the University of Technology “Prof Dr. Ahmed M. H. Al-Ghaban” awarded a book of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Emad S. Al- Hassani, Assist. Prof. Dr. Jawad K. Oleiwi, and Lec. Dr. Alaa A. Mohammed” from the Department of Materials Engineering/University of Technology, due to their distinguished efforts in achieved a patent, according to book No.  A.N.A/232 dated 14/12/2021.
The title of patent: “Manufacture of material as implants within the human body from polyetheretherketone (PEEK) as substitutes for metal implants”.
Abstract
Nanoindentation is a powerful technique to determine various mechanical properties of materials at the nanoscale, such as for example young’s modulus and hardness. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a material that is widely used in medicine because its mechanical properties show excellent similarity to those of human bone. The main objective of this study is to conduct a manufacturing experiment nano polyetheretherketone composite for characterization of its mechanical properties using a tensile test and nanoindentation techniques of mechanical tests. The results of mechanical tests exhibit improvements of youngs modulus, hardness and ultimate tensile strength at 1.5 wt % for two types of reinforcement but the higher values obtained when reinforced by (nHA).

Awarding PhD. Degree

As a part of the duties for the scientific committee in the department of the materials engineering, panel examiners of engineers’ staff have been formed to examine the PhD. dissertation related to the postgraduate student “Marwaan Abbas Madhloom”.
The formed panel examiners staff were head by the Professor Dr. Alaa Abd Al-Hussan attieya, with the other co-members of the examiners who are (Prof. Dr. Jasim Muhammed Salman, Prof. Dr. Emad Saady Abd- Al Kareem, Prof. Dr Jumaa Salman Jeyad, Associate Prof. Fadhil Abbass Hashim).
The dissertation which has been about "Study The Effect of Isothermal, Cold and Cryogenic Treatments on Monotonic and Cyclic Properties of Aluminum Alloy Type Al-Mg-Si" has been supervised by Professor Dr. Ali Hussien Attaiwei and co- advised by the associate Proff. Dr. Jamal Jallal Dawood. In addition, it was evaluated scientifically by the Professors Ali Sadiq Yaseer and Ayad Muraad Takhakh, and linguistically by associate lecture Hussam Hussien Ali.
After deep discussion and lots of arguments made by the panel faced by big challenges from Madhloom to prove his point of view at some dark spots in his dissertation. The examination has been ended by scoring Madhloom a degree of “Passed”, and awarding him a PhD degree at a condition to be acted to the examiners’ suggestion.
In an attendance style for all, the examination occurred in 15/12/2021, at the Department of the Materials Engineering.

Abstract
This research attempts to study the influence of annealing, precipitation hardening, and nitriding treatments on monotonic and repeated characteristics and microstructural inspections of AA6061. Quenching mediums are water, local freezer, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen. Ageing temperatures of (170, 200, and 230)°C are used for intervals of (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) hours. Plasma nitriding treatment was performed on  alloy to enhance its hardness and wear opposition. The best ageing interval is (6) hours. Hardness, impact and fatigue resistance are improved after nitriding and quenching in liquid nitrogen.

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a doctoral degree to the student Shams Nassif Jassim, Department of Materials Engineering/ University of Technology, for her titled thesis

"Waste Polymer Depolymerazation by Nano Fluid Catalyst for sustainable materials engineering applications"

Where the discussion took place in the Graduate Studies Hall in Building C in the department on Tuesday, 21/12/2021, and the discussion committee consisted of :

  1. Prof. Dr. Aseel Bassim Abdel Hussein, , (Chairman)
  2. Prof. Dr. Ibtihal Kareem Shaker (Member)
  3. Assist. Prof. Dr.Ali Hussein Abbar (Member)
  4. Assist. Prof. Dr.Kazem Matar Shabib, (Member)
  5. Assist. Prof. Dr.Laith Qais Abbas (Member)
  6. Assist. Prof. Dr.Fadel Abbas Hashem, (supervisor and member)
  7. Assist. Prof. Dr.Mohamed Abdel Hussein Mohamed (supervisor and member)

As well as evaluating the thesis scientifically by Prof. Dr.Qusai Fadhil Abdel Hamid/ University of Technology/ Department of Chemical Engineering and Prof. Awdeh Jabbar Brihi/ Babylon University/ College of Materials Engineering, and linguistically by Prof. Naseer Abdul-Hussein Nasser/ University of Technology/ Materials Engineering Department. After the discussion committee recorded its observations on the thesis, which were divided between explanation and correction and the student’s defense of her thesis and the discussion ended, the committee decided to evaluate the thesis and decided to grant the student a doctorate degree with a full grade.AbstractThe study aims to find a radical solution to the problems of plastic waste and the resulting environmental damage. This problem is solved by recycling plastic waste (water bottles) and converting it into DPET powder by reaction process and using it in various applications. The effect of degraded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on the properties of fuel fluid and paints was analyzed and their properties improved. Characterization of the deterioration was carried out through Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanner (DSC) and tests tested for fuel materials such as viscosity, density, flash point and residue Carbon tests. Paints were tested such as adhesion, thickness and weathering tests. The results showed that the use of percentages of catalyst succeeded in cracking DPET powder. Polyethylene gave a radical solution to plastic waste problems around the world. The use of DPET in the paints also improved the required specifications.
