Dr. Nadia Aziz Butti, a member of the Materials Engineering faculty, has been granted a scientific upgrade. She has transitioned from the rank of lecturer to the rank of assistant professor, having fulfilled all the requirements for academic promotion. This advancement entitles her to enjoy all the rights and privileges associated with her new rank, as specified in the relevant university order dated 3/1/ 2024.
The Department of Materials Engineering organized an Arabic calligraphy competition for students, teachers, and department employees on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at ten in the morning in the courtyard of Building A. The event saw active participation from numerous students, teachers, and staff members of the department. The Administrative Assistant, Laith Waddah Ismail, was present during the competition. At the conclusion of the event, gifts and certificates of appreciation were distributed to the winners.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to enhance the performance of sunscreen cream with natural additives (Bee wax, Lanolin, Sandal wood extract) because these materials are safe on the skin, non-toxic, and do not have side effects on the skin. Sunscreen cream has been tested by physical, chemical and biological tests. The results are explained that the prepared sunscreen samples showed the absence of irritation and redness and better than commercial sunscreen in transmission, anti-bacterial, Ph and SPF tests and Convergent values in FTIR and physical test.
After the discussion committee recorded its observations on the thesis, which were divided between explanation, correction, and the student’s defense of her thesis
At the end of the discussion, the committee settled to evaluate the thesis and decided to award the student a master’s degree with a pass grade.
The Materials Engineering Department holds a workshop

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology, in cooperation with the Center for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, held a workshop entitled: “The steps followed in applying for academic promotions according to Instructions No. 167 of 2017”
This will be on Tuesday, 12/12/2023, in the Electronic Hall/Building A at 10:30 in the morning, in the presence of the Scientific Assistant, The respected Asst. Prof. Dr. Kazem Matar Shabib and a group of lecturers staff, and Prof. Dr. Rana Afif Majeed, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Hind Basil Ali. The workshop included how to calculate grades in Table (1) (2), conditions for applying for the academic ranks to be obtained, and instructions recorded in the Scientific Promotions Guide No. 167 of 2017. At the end of the workshop, the Scientific Assistant praised the efforts made by the two lecturers and presented them certificates of appreciation.

The Materials Engineering Department held an awareness lecture entitled:
"Combat extremism and spread a culture of human rights, tolerance and acceptance of others"
It is within the framework of the work of the Educational and Psychological Counseling Division, on Tuesday, 114/11/2024, at nine in the morning in Hall No. 8, where lecturer L. Iman Kazem, and in the presence of the Scientific Assistant, the respected Asst. Prof. Dr. Kazem Matar Shabib, in the presence of a group of students from the department/second stage. The lecture included that religious extremism refers to a state of ideological stagnation or intellectual closure and is characterized by not accepting any idea, that is, it is closed thinking characterized by not accepting any idea or intellectual belief that the individual attempts or The person has access and obtains it within the group to which he belongs. At the end of the lecture, the Scientific Assistant praised the efforts made by L. Iman Kazem presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

The Department of Materials Engineering holds a course in civil defense

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology held a civil defense course entitled "Safety, civil defense and risk management" for the period 26-30 /11/ 2023/ in the electronic hall / Building B. The lecture was given by the Administrative Assistant, Assist. Prof. Dr. Laith Wadah Ismail, where he discussed how to prepare an emergency plan in the department and form work teams to manage crises.
The main objectives of the emergency plan
1- Reduce risks as much as possible.
2- Increase the response with a rapid, effective and positive reaction if the disaster occurs.
3- Accurate assessment of the main risks to which one may be exposed.
4 - Realistic awareness of the resources and procedures that actually exist within the department to deal with risks and the extent to which they can be increased and improved within the budget and functional structure.
5- Commitment to continue strengthening plans and implementing them in the future while ensuring that preparedness remains effective and implemented.
At the end of the course, the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazem Olaiwi, praised the lecturer for the efforts made and presented him and the participants with certificates of appreciation.

The Materials Engineering Department organized a workshop as part of the Women Empowerment Committee's activities. The workshop, titled "Enhancing Women's Health," took place on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 10:00 AM in the Doctoral Hall, Building B. The workshop was attended by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazem Aliwi, and the Scientific Assistant, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kazem Matar Shbeeb, as well as the Administrative assistant, Asst. Prof. Dr. Laith Wadhah Ismaeel, and a group of department faculty and staff.
The workshop presented by Dr. Lujain Anwar Abboud, a physician from the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad. The topics covered in the workshop included women's physiology, life stresses, the multiple responsibilities and roles they play, and how these factors may sometimes cause them to neglect their health. The discussion also addressed ways to promote positive health practices.
At the end of the workshop, Asst. Prof. Dr. Laith Wadhah and all participants praised Dr. Lujain Anwar for her valuable lecture. In appreciation of her efforts, they presented her with a certificate of commendation.

They decided to award the student a Master’s degree with a pass grade
Abstract:
This work aims to produce a new type of composite material consist from animal natural fiber for cow hair as reinforcement in epoxy resin matrix filled with graphene nanoplatelet. In this study, each of the Weibull statistics model, mechanical, thermal and morphological properties were examined. The results indicated to increase in mechanical properties, with an increase in fiber reinforcement and filled with graphene nanoplatelet reached twice what the pure sample. But thermal conductivity decreases with increase the fiber concentration and increase with graphene nanoplatelet.

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology, within the framework of the work of the Educational and Psychological Counseling Division, held a workshop entitled
“The importance of using sustainable means of transportation, such as bicycle, walking, etc., for students.”
This toke place on Tuesday, 12/12/2023, at nine o’clock in the morning in the electronic hall / Building A.
The workshop was lectured by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Hussein, in the presence of Scientific Assistant, the respected Asst. Professor Dr. Kadhem Muttar Shabib, and in the presence of a group of teachers and students.
The problems of using traditional methods of transportation, the concept of sustainability, types of modern sustainable transportation methods, and the successful experiences of some countries that used sustainable means of transportation were discussed. The role of society in promoting a culture of using sustainable transportation methods.
At the end of the workshop, Asst. Professor Kadhem Muttar Shabib praised the lecturer for the efforts he made.

A field scientific visit to the Center for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at the University of Technology on Wednesday, 22/11/2023, in the presence of a group of department teachers, Prof. Dr. Alaa Alaa El-Din, L.D. Shaima Mahdi, Asst.L. Iman Kazim, Asst.L. Nizar Jabbar and a group of second-year students in order to learn about the advanced equipment and available tests, as well as to view the rest of the research services provided by the center. The Materials Engineering Department, represented by the General Materials Engineering Branch and the Ceramic and Building Materials Engineering Branch, made a scientific field visit to the Building Research Department/Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities on Sunday, 12/11/2023. The delegation was headed by the Head of the General Materials Engineering Branch, Respected Asst. Prof. Dr. Jamal Jalal Dawoud and Mrs. Head of the Ceramic and Building Materials Engineering Branch, Respected Asst. Prof. Dr. Heba Anwar Abdullah, and in the presence of a group of department staff and students of the fourth stage in the general materials engineering branch and the ceramics and building materials engineering branch, the visit aimed to open horizons of academic cooperation with the practical side to prepare engineers capable of applying scientific engineering basics in their work and selecting and developing materials suitable for scientific applications. The delegation visited the department's scientific departments and laboratories and was briefed on the latest equipment and the most important tests it conducts
At the end of the visit, the heads of the delegation thanked those working in the Building Research Department for their cooperation and patience to answer all inquiries.
