ٍAward a master's degree to Iftikhar Amer

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a master’s degree to the student "Iftikhar Amer Selim", Department of the Materials Engineering/ University of Technology for her tagged thesis.

"Fabrication of Body Armor from Hybrid Composites"

Where the discussion took place in the Postgraduate Studies Hall in Building B in the department on Wednesday 10/11/2021, and the discussion committee consisted of:

  1. Assist. Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazem Aliwi (Chairman)
  2. Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali Hussain Muhammad (Member)
  3. Assist. Prof. Dr. Qahtan Adnan Hamad (Member)
  4. Assist. Prof. Dr. Mayada Shanan Abed (supervisor and member)
  5. Assist. Prof. Dr. Biman, accompanied by Ahmed (supervisor and member)

As well, the dissertation was scientifically evaluated by Prof. Ahmed Fadel Hamza/ University of Babylon/ College of Materials Engineering and Prof. Mohsen Nouri Hamza/ University of Technology/ Mechanical Engineering Department. Moreover, it has been linguistically evaluated by Prof. Khaled Khudair Abbas/ University of Technology/ Department of Materials Engineering.

This work aims to prepare hybrid composite materials to evaluate their behavior under ballistic impact experimentally and numerically. Multilayered armors were designed as ceramic/woven fabric reinforced epoxy/metal or polymer layer. In experimental ballistic tests, a 9 mm Full Metal Jacket FMJ bullet was launched at 307 m/s towards armor 30*30 cm2. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to simulate the ballistic impact resistance of the armor. The results from simulation and experimental testing were compared with ballistic tests and there was a good agreement of these results.

After the discussion, the committee recorded its notes on the thesis, which were split between explanation and correction, and the student’s defense of her work and the discussion ended. The committee decided to evaluate the thesis and grant the student a master’s degree with a full grade.
