ٍAward a master's degree

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a master’s degree to the student "Ghufran Dhafer Khaled", Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology, for her tagged thesis.

"Fabrication and Characterization of Composite Coating by Electrostatic Spray Method"

Where the discussion took place in the Postgraduate Studies Hall in Building C in the department on Tuesday 16/11/2021, and the discussion committee consisted of:

  1. Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdel Hassan Attia (Chairman)
  2. Assist. Prof. Dr. Rana Saba Jawad (Member)
  3. Lect. Dr. Sura Salem Ahmed (Member)
  4. Lect. Dr. Muhannad Najah Jawad (Supervisor and member)
  5. Assist. Prof. Dr. Hana Arir Smeij (Supervisor and member)

The dissertation had evaluated scientifically by Prof. Dr. Basil Ajeel Abbas/ University of Babylon/ College of Materials Engineering and Senior Research Leader Dr. Hussain Muhammad Yousef/ Ministry of Industry and Minerals/ State Company for Steel Industries, and linguistically by Assist. Prof. Dr. Laith Waddah Ismail/ University of Technology/ Materials Engineering Department.

Abstract

316L stainless steel alloys are extensively used in orthopedic applications for the fixations and substitutions of defective bone tissues in the human body. this study attempts to increase the alloy's resistance against corrosion, and improve the bone-implant interaction by encouraging the osseointegration while maintaining its good mechanical properties, through applying a modified coating layer of PMMA-based composites with two different bio-active ceramics i.e. hydroxyapatite and titanium carbide as reinforcement materials using dry electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) under constant conditions. The biological behavior of the coated samples was studied by investigating their corrosion, antibacterial, and wetting attributes. The results revealed that a high surface wettability, good osteoconductivity, improved antibacterial, and anticorrosion attributions were also observed.

After the discussion committee recorded its observations on the thesis, which were divided between explanation and correction and the student’s defense of her message and the discussion ended, the committee decided to evaluate the thesis, and decided to grant the student a master’s degree with a full grade.
